Five Minutes with ACHE - Recap: ACHE 2016 Conference

As described on the ACHE website, ACHE is a dynamic network of diverse professionals who are dedicated to promoting excellence in continuing higher education and to sharing their expertise and experience with one another.

Dynamic is only one word of many to describe the 78th Annual Association for Continuing Higher Education (ACHE) conference which was held this past October in New Orleans, LA at the historic Hotel Monteleone. The theme this year was "Innovation, Transformation, and Service in Continuing Higher Education: Creating Pathways to the Future." Topics included: research and strategy, transformative roles and responsibilities, practical application of theory, effective learning/teaching tools and environments, impactful marketing, and more. We had 127 universities, colleges, exhibitors, sister associations, and other organizations represented as part of the 2016 conference. Individuals from all around the country and Canada attended traveled to New Orleans (the furthest distance was 2,612 miles). Of those attending, more than 70 were first time attendees!

There were 43 concurrent sessions to choose from in addition to our keynote sessions. Our keynotes included: Dr. King Alexander, president of Louisiana State University, Mr. Zach Stone, co-founder of Red Kite Consulting, and Ms. Kim Weitkamp, a humorist, coach, producer, and singer/songwriter.

Prior and during this event, fun'raising events were held as part of a fundraising drive to raise money for grants and scholarships. We surpassed our scholarship goal and collected $3,735. In addition, there was an ACHE service opportunity with the New Orleans Kids Partnership (NOKP) to "Fill the Bus" with school supplies for the children in the area.

StoneACHE Service Opportunity – "Fill the Bus" School Supplies Drive

Are you looking for a way to contribute to the New Orleans Community while you are attending the ACHE conference this year? If so, we’ve given you an opportunity to make a difference for children and families in the greater New Orleans area. This year, we have formed a relationship with the New Orleans Kids Partnership (NOKP). NOKP is committed to "expanding access to high quality services for children, youth and families in Greater New Orleans." One of the goals of NOKP is to provide free or low-cost professional development opportunities for professionals in non-profit organizations who serve children and families in the city. We have offered free participation to select segments of the conference program to NOKP professionals. We’ve also organized a school supply drive for some of NOKP’s partner organizations. So, when you are packing for New Orleans, plan to include some school supplies to help fill a bus of supplies for the children of the Crescent City. If you can’t sacrifice shoe room for school supplies there will be locations near the Hotel Monteleone where you can buy supplies for the drive as well. We hope you will help us make a difference in our host city.
